Friday Roundup: Four Things

What a week! It feels like it’s been dragging on, which tends to happen when you have your eyes set for Friday. Why Friday? Our new couch gets delivered today for the den area! We moved our Room & Board couch up to the formal living room, where it’s better suited.

This room is nowhere close to done, but the excitement is due in part to the fact that it’s been sitting empty since the day we moved in. The couch and the rug are the only things final about this room. All else is in flux. Let’s hope we can get it figured out soon.

I picked up these cute boots from Zara to go with all of my casual outfits I’ve been wearing recently.

I’ve switched out my old Naked palette with the Naked2. It’s been great so far!

Last but not least, a picture of my handsome husband and his silly face now graces the edge of my desk inside an super nice mid-century-esque frame I scored at Target!

Happy Friday, folks! Hope you have an amazing weekend.

Valentine’s Day Nails <3

I try my best not to make this into a nail polish blog but being that nails are my #1 obsession, it becomes quite difficult not to indulge myself in everything nail-related.

Anyway, that’s besides the point.

Check out these Sally Hansen Salon Effects for Valentine’s Day. I am not a fan of Valentine’s Day. Not even a little bit. But how cute are these? My favorite are the “xoxo” ones. They’re adorable enough for me to put them on my nails anyway.

Look out for them at your local Target or Ulta store!

TOMs Ballet Flats Are Out!

TOM announced a little later in the year last year that they would be releasing a series of ballet flats as a part of their growing collection.

I love flats and was really looking forward to it, not knowing they were $79. When I received the email at midnight last night, I hopped on and was a little taken back by the steep price. Why so expensive?

Well, I splurged anyway since I am a TOMs devotee.

If you’re willing to spend the extra money, go get yours now! They might sell out pretty quickly.

Essie ‘A Spring To Invest In’ Collection

Essie’s first collection for 2012 will be releasing sometime this month. These colors just reinforce my trend spotting predictions for S/S 2012.

The six colors are made up of 3 feminine and romantic colors and the rest are bright and bold. I absolutely love the pastels and am looking forward to seeing them in full force this summer.

The colors from left to right: Navigate Her, A Crewed Interest, To Buy or Not To Buy, Tour de Finance, Ole Claliente, and Orange, It’s obvious.

Rachel Roy’s Debut Shoe Collection

Rachel Roy finally makes a foray into the shoe business, which according to her has been 7 years in the making. I’m a fan of Rachel Roy’s clothing line and some of these pumps look promising. I am absolutely, hands down infatuated with court pumps right now!

Her collection ranges from a little under $200 to around $600 and spans the entire range between flats and boots and should be hitting stores in August of this year.

Monday Morning: Metallic Nails

I’m starting to really dig the metallic nails. I’m not talking the glittery gold and silver nail polishes, but the intensely smooth surface of Minx metallic wraps. They truly are lovely and is a departure from polishes that I’m used to wearing.

I know the trend is a little old by now—ancient, even—and that I’m late to the game, but I’ve been noticing it a lot more recently and because of that, it’s grown on me.

Time to go find a nail salon!

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm

I’m just going to put it out there. My addiction to chapstick and lipstick comes in second after my addiction to nail polish.

I love sheer and minimal and I love Burt’s Bees. Bam! A twofer. You know, two-for-one. It contains a bunch of beneficial ingredients: sunflower oil, coconut oil, beeswax and vitamin E to name a few. Plus, you can find it at just about any drugstore.

Don’t get me wrong, I still like EOS. This one is just a bit better. Imagine if there was a line of EOS chopsticks chapsticks that were tinted? Someone get on that, stat!

Style Tips: Anatomy of a Suit

My first Style Tips post happens to be my first post for men! Neat. I promise, for all the dude readers (if I even have any), that I’ll try to post for guys more often. ‘Try’ is the keyword here.

A man in a suit is quite different than a man in a suit that fits. I prefer the ladder. Think James Bond, Donald Draper, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Ryan Gosling. Now, imagine them all wearing baggy suits from Ross? It doesn’t work.

A suit that fits—regardless of your preference of cut or color—emits confidence, sexiness, and masculinity. A suit that doesn’t fit, which is usually pulled straight from the discount racks and made from less expensive material, is obvious whether or not you think it is. If it’s cheap, you’ll look cheap.Trust me.

I think every grown man should own at least one nice suit and a pair of fancy kicks because you never know when you’ll need it. Think of it as an investment because a quality suit will last for years.

1. It probably won’t be quick and easy. You have to spend time trying them on to find out which cut works best for you and which fabric hangs nicely, depending on your stature.

2. Most of the time, it probably won’t fit you perfectly. Get a tailor! This is where the work of a specialist comes in. Even if you skimp on the suit, spend the extra money on a professional tailor and make it look perfect.

3. Two button versus three button. Three button suits are generic and will most likely fit nicely on any man. Two buttons usually work best on men who are slim and tall (5’10” or up).

4. Get your measurements and try your luck online. A visit to the tailors and a few bucks might save you money on a custom fitted suit if you hop online and visit stores like Indochino. They’re all affordably priced.

5. If a custom-fitted suit is too pricey, try big-box stores that carry modern/contemporary clothing. Topman, Nordstroms, Banana Republic, H&M, J.Crew, Zara.

6. Look under the collar for felt lining. If you want to make the best of your investment, suit jackets with a felt lining can also double up as outerwear.

7. Suits can also have thread counts. Just like women counts their threads on the sheets, men can pay the same attention to detail to their suits. The higher count, the softer the fabric. But be careful, this also means that it’s more delicate.

There are many more tips I can provide, but for the sake of lengthiness, I’ll cut it at it’s knees here. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Monday Morning: Happy Chinese New Years!

Let’s face it. Dragons just don’t look good on anything—clothes, pants, shoes, tattoos, hats—so there is no way on earth I’m going to be putting dragons on my blog. No thank you.

However..

The Year of the Dragon is considered the luckiest year in the Chinese zodiac with the belief that a child boron during this year is smarter and more prosperous. So, friends, go forth and get knocked up!

Style Icon: Miranda Kerr

I’ve said this previously and it was something that really resonated with me afterwards so I’m just going to repeat myself.

How you dress yourself casually is where your real sense of style shines the brightest.

With that said.. forget Miranda Kerr on the runway, red carpet or making public appearances. I think she is much more amazing when she’s caught running to the grocery store or hailing a cab. Her style is impeccable. She looks down to earth—her sense of style is so classy and simple that she has the ability to make anything she wears feel accessible to anyone.

It was so hard for me to just choose 6 photos!

Besides Charlize Theron, Miranda Kerr is my other favorite style icon.

Friday Roundup: Four Things

Happy Friday everyone!

I have been in the most chipper mood since I received amazing news yesterday. I can’t spill the deets, but it has made me one happy girl jumping for joy and feeling ridiculously lucky.

I picked up these nice aromatherapy candles at Target a couple of days ago that smell amazing. Peaceful, which is Lavender and Eucalyptus. Happiness, which is Sparkling Yuzu and Lime. They have a few other ones and they all awesome. All of them come as candles and diffusers. I’m probably going to go back for the others because they’re just that nice. What makes it even better is the great branding and label design.

Stripey straws waiting by patiently for the perfect party! I am such the sucker for anything colorful and cutesy. (You can purchase them for yourself here!)

My necklace that I purchased on Etsy about a month ago has finally arrived all the way from Israel. I needed a new everyday necklace that would pair well with the one I wear now, which is a tiny star. Here’s the same similar tiny heart necklace.

A printed photo of Cooper that I am in love with is now framed and ready to hang. I print all of my photos from Mpix.com. They’re super affordable, quick and the quality is great.

Covet or Leave It: Retro-Inspired Shades

I wish I had a nose bridge. I constantly dream of wearing sunglasses that don’t have nose pads. Something different than aviators and, well, that’s all. Just aviators. That’s pretty much all I feel comfortable wearing. Otherwise, I’d have sunglasses that rest on my cheeks which makes me feel completely goofy.

Even with the hesitance, I have found myself falling in love with various shapes and sizes, pads or no pads. Gone are the days where I played it safe and went with something typical.

I think I might have to make a pit stop at the sunglass store soon.

From top to bottom: Juicy Couture, $120; Marc by Marc Jacobs, $98; Ray Ban, $150

Verdict:

Trendspotting: S/S 2012

It’s about that time of the year again where I dream of tropical islands and beach resorts, lightweight clothing and mojitos. Oh spring, where art thou?

Actually, I’m lying. I’m not in New York anymore. Texas has been pretty warm this “winter” and as I am typing this, it is 73° and beaming. Even with warmer weather, there’s just something that feels a bit unorthodox about wearing spring colors in the middle of January.

To prep us for it’s arrival, here are a few trends I’ve noticed off the runway that are making their way on to the shelves:

It’s going to be about fully bright saturated colors, flirty florals, denim, romanticized hues, pretty pastels and earthy tones this year. Metallics are in there too but I’m tired of it. For now.

The biggest trend out of all of those? Definitely pastels. It’s everywhere!

An easy way to spot the color trends is by watching the red carpet during awards season to see what the stars are wearing and even though it’s only the beginning, the Golden Globes has proved that we might be spot on.

Yigal Azrouel; Betsey Johnson; Helmut Lang; Tadashi Shoji; D&G; Peter Som

High heels, higher slits One of my favorites! I think high slits are ridiculously sexy but is still enough to leave something to the imagination. This also means that maxi skirts are going to continue to be on the rise.

Diaphanous and flowing Be on the watch for outfits that create ripples in the wind. I love lightweight fabrics in neutral colors. Not only is it comfortable but it adds a delicate touch of femininity.

Bold prints and colors Sprinkled amongst all of the light touches, there are bold prints and solid colors. See you later color blocking!

I’m pretty sure there’s much more to be spotted, but those are the top 3 trends I’ll be following going into next season. Some of my top picks below:

1. Rachel Zoe ‘Vanessa’ Maxi Skirt, $495; 2. Rich & Skinny Bikini Crop Jeans in Mint, $89; 3. TopShop Slash Back Blouse in Pale Pink, $64

Christian Louboutin Spring/Summer 2012

Behold, the Christian Louboutin ‘Bis Un Bout’ from the S/S 12 collection. It definitely is a thing of beauty.

I’ve noticed late last year that pointy toed pumps are slowly making it’s way back in to our lives. I rid my closet of all pointy toe pumps back in 2009 or so, but with the popularity of Zara’s ‘Court’ shoe on fashion bloggers around the world, the old trend seems to be gaining some traction.

Below are some of the other shoes that caught my attention from the same collection.

2012 Golden Globes

I rarely watch the Red Carpet for award shows and follow-up with pictures the day after but since I was already on the couch, I tuned in to the Red Carpet on E!. I got pretty excited to see what the stars would show up in, but felt underwhelmed after the red carpet wrap up.

Here’s the recap:

Lea Michele Sexy and fierce
Charlize Theron J’adore Dior. And peach. And sexy legs.
Claire Danes Business in the front, party in the back

Jessica Biel Elie Saab lace dress with an open back. Sad she was sans engagement ring but the dress itself was a bit ‘wedding-esque’.
Nicole Ritchie Typical Nicole. Very simple but still sexy.
Jenna Dewan Tatum Beautiful teal with a sexy open back.

Amanda Peet Must have borrowed her grandmother’s bed skirts
Katherine McPhee Completely washed out
Missi Pyle Recycled her high school prom dress?
